Milena Ivić (b. 1995, Novi Sad) graduated from Banjaluka’s Arts Academy, where she won awards for best drawing, painting, and photograph. In 2019, she won first prize at the exhibition of fine arts graduates at MSURS. In 2020, her essay won a contest organized by the feminist magazine BONA, and her first solo exhibition „What do we do with all this freedom?“ opened in Banjaluka’s Galerija Plus. It was closed by MSURS after just 18 hours. Selected group exhibitions: „Us, Punctums“, 2018, MSURS; „Reconstruction: Four Perspectives on the Contemporary Art Scene in RS“ 2020, MSURS; „Superexposure01“ 2021, KC Trebinje, produced in Mischa Kuball’s workshop. In 2022, in Banjaluka’s Social Center (BASOC), she founded the open studio "SOBA" initiative for horizontal networking between artists, activists, theorists, and performers. She is currently enrolled in a master’s program at the Academy.
Her work was influenced by the ambivelent experience of becoming a woman in a patriarchal, Orthodox Christian family. Using conceptual and performative strategies, she examines women’s roles within political, ethnonational, and religious contexts. By occupying a position of authority, she deconstructs the illusion that authority doesn’t exist and that we can act freely. She combines a provocative, socially-engaged, and subversive approach to art.
